Those near Lambton Centennial Public School will notice construction ramp up this month as a new baseball diamond is installed.
The Petrolia school received $150,000 in grant funding in May from the Jays Care Foundation and TD, through the Field of Dreams program.
Lambton Kent District School Board Associate Director of Corporate Services Brian McKay said construction is expected to start soon and finish this fall.
"Before the snow flies," he said.
McKay said preliminary work was done over the summer break to test the soil quality before construction could begin.
"It will involve a full new galvanized steel backstop, new aluminum bleachers, team benches, as well as site work for the infield and the outfield," McKay said. "Some exterior electrical work as well to bring power to the ball diamond."
Southwest Fence & Decks was awarded the $322,352 contract.
During the construction process, the area will be fenced off. McKay also said the contractor will be mindful of school times (such as bus drop-offs and pick-ups) to avoid construction-related traffic congestion.
McKay said the school board would love to have some kind of opening celebration once the ball diamond is complete; it's something they'll consult on with the Jays Care Foundation.
"[No decisions yet on what that might look like, but definitely something the board does want to do," he said. "It's very exciting for the school, we're very excited to start on it and get that done for our students."
Lambton Centennial was one of 15 recipients chosen for the 2025 Field of Dreams program.
