Pathways and LCDS recognize FASD awareness month

Community organizations are raising awareness about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) this September for FASD awareness month.

This year's theme is 'Everyone Plays a Part'.

FASD is a life-long disability that affects the brain and body of people who are exposed to alcohol while in the womb.

Around four per cent of Canadians have been diagnosed with the disorder, which is more than the number of people with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Down Syndrome.

"It is a preventable disability but it's a complex issue, so we need to make sure we have the appropriate supports in place," said FASD Network Committee Member Karen Holland.

A panel will be held at Pathways Health Centre For Children on September 25, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Committee Member Amy Burrows said people will be dressed in red to show support.

"RJ Formanek, the creator of Red Shoes Rocks will be coming along with Matt Sinclair and three local panelists to speak about lived experience," she said.

Residents may also notice lawn signs on display throughout the month.

Holland said it's all about starting the conversation.

"When you start to see lawn signs or you see posters or you see something on someone's social media, we're hoping you're going to be interested and want to learn more about FASD," she said.

Locally, the Lambton County Development Services (LCDS) provides supports for adults while Pathways provides supports for children.
