US CBP intercepts two drug hauls in one day

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents were busy in Detroit and Port Huron on Thursday.

CBP agents worked with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations to intercept 475 kilograms of suspected cocaine at the Ambassador Bridge, and 425 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine at the Blue Water Bridge.

The seizures took place within hours of each other.

Agents in Detroit selected a commercial truck headed to Windsor for secondary inspection and uncovered several bricks of a white powder within numerous boxes and duffel bags.

The powder was confirmed to be cocaine through testing. The drugs were confiscated along with the truck and the trailer. The driver, from India, now faces federal drug charges.

"Preventing the scourge of dangerous narcotics from harming our communities is an essential part of our border security mission, and we'll continue to hold the line against the illicit drug trade," said CBP Port of Detroit Director Marc Calixte.

CBP agents in Port Huron searched a commercial vehicle headed to Sarnia and found about 400 bags of methamphetamine. The drugs were also confiscated with the truck and trailer. The Canadian driver is also facing criminal charges.

"This case is testament to the collaborative effort put forth by CBP officers and our law enforcement partners each day to protect the homeland," said CBP Area Port of Port Huron Director Jeffery Wilson.

Both cases remain under investigation.
