Popular Salvation Army fundraiser marks final year

A long-running car show in support of the Salvation Army, will mark its 16th and final year this weekend.

J's Performance Invade the Close Car Show rolls into Sarnia on Saturday.

The popular event will see over 300 vintage, muscle, and modern cars parked along the Rutherglen Close subdivision.

There will also be a barbeque, DJ, and awards.

It costs $10 to register a car. Admission is free for spectators but donations of cash or non-perishable food are welcome.

Salvation Army Captain Brad Webster said it's a unique event, and a great way to raise much-needed funds for the organization.

"The feedback for this event has been amazing, people say they've never seen anything like it," said Webster. "They've never seen neighbours come together and actually allow people to park their cars on their front lawn."

Webster said the money will benefit a few of their programs.

"It goes towards our foodbank, first and foremost, and anything left over will go into things like our Christmas Hamper Program, our community outreach vehicle, and so on," he said.

Over the past 15 years, the event has raised well over $100,000 for the Salvation Army.

Webster is hopeful this year is the biggest one yet.

"This will be the last one," said Webster. "As people get older, it's a lot harder to put these events on. The set up and tear down for the older crowd obviously makes it a bit more challenging. We just felt like this was the year to end it off."

Webster said the organization continues to see year over year increases in foodbank usage.

"We also serve 140 meals every Thursday night at some of the community housing projects," he said. "We also have Christmas right around the corner. We're going to see more families. Last year, we served 480 children with toy hampers and 84 teens within the community as well. So, there is a big need."

Rutherglen Close runs between Cathcart Boulevard and Lakeshore Road, east of Murphy Road.

Saturday's event is from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., rain or shine.
