A popular, long-standing corner store in Sarnia's north end is marking its final day in business on September 30.
The Milk Marc location at Michigan Avenue and Murphy Road, which also housed the Twin Lakes Post Office, is shutting down after 55 years of serving the community.
The family owned business was established in 1970, and has been operated by president Bob Guibert for the past 25 years.
Guibert said it's the right time for him to wind things down.
"I’m simply approaching retirement and need to scale down the business," said Guibert. "My wife Liz is retired now, and I want to spend more time with her than I have over the years. It’s just time."
Guibert said there have been big changes to the industry over the years.
"In the early days, the corner store played a much bigger role in terms of filling everyone’s fridge and pantry and it also provided a great business opportunity for small business operators," he said. "Over time, that has shifted to the large corporations. So it’s tougher today and you have to be willing to put in a lot of hours, but I think there are still opportunities for the next generation."
Guibert thanked the loyal customers who made the store a success, adding closing the store is one of the hardest decisions he's had to make.
"Some of our customers have been coming to this store for over five decades," said Guibert. "It’s difficult to put into words, but I’d like to thank them all. I’d also of course like to thank the staff, past and present. Some of them have been here all along for many of those decades too. The best part of the job for me has been the daily interaction. All the laughter, and conversations with the staff and customers. It’s always been the best part of my day. I’m very grateful to them all."
Those needing to access Canada Post services are asked to visit either the Shoppers Drug Mart in the Eastland Plaza or the post office on Christina Street.
Milk Marc's other location, at 900 Wellington St., is still open.
