The Sarnia Police Service is working to equip parents and caregivers with the knowledge they need to keep their children safe online.
They're holding a seminar on how to stay out of trouble on the internet, especially when it comes to social media.
Cst. Nick McLean will be spearheading the presentation, and said a number of important topics will be addressed.
"We talk about cyber bullying and goes into things like sextortion and even sex trafficking," said Cst. McLean. "I believe it's important for parents to be in open communication with their kids about the internet and their social media. It's important to set clear boundaries and stay informed about the apps and sites that your children use."
Cst. McLean said another thing parents should do is check the privacy settings on apps.
"Review those parental controls," he said. "Things like Snapchat have age restrictions. According to Snapchat, teens must be at least 13 years of age to create an account."
Cst. McLean said it's crucial that kids are able to recognize online dangers and make good choices to stay out of harm's way.
He said during his past experience as a youth bureau officer for many years, he's had the opportunity to investigate a lot of situations where kids were either breaking the rules of social media or putting themselves in harmful situations.
The presentation is set to take place at Sarnia-Lambton Rebound, at 10 Lorne Cres. in Sarnia, on Monday, November 24 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Pre-registration is not required.
