The Town of Petrolia has adopted its 2026 budget, which includes the largest capital expenditure plan in its history with over $14 million to be spent.
A few changes were made to the proposed budget, posted online for review on October 31, after a public session Tuesday.
As a result, the overall budget increase was reduced from 3 per cent to 2 per cent.
Water and sewer rates will both increase by 4 per cent, and council promotional materials will decrease from $6,500 to $1,500.
The dog park capital expense of $22,000 was approved to move ahead.
The proposed cemetery paving project, valued at $80,000, and $70,000 in proposed capital improvements to the Petrolia Farmers’ Market ceiling, were both deferred to a future budget for consideration.
The largest portion of the work on the Water Intake Project will take place in 2026, with more than $10 million being spent on the replacement and upgrade.
That project is about 73 per cent funded through federal and provincial grants, and represents the second largest project that Petrolia has undertaken in many years.
This year, Mayor Brad Loosley implemented a Budget Review Team consisting of Deputy Mayor Joel Field, Councillor Bill Clark (Finance Liaison), and himself.
After the meeting, council shortened the amendment period and mayor Loosley opted to end the strong mayor veto period early, so the municipality could adopt the document.
Amendments can still be made throughout the year if necessary.
On Monday, December 8, a public information session will be held at Victoria Hall at 6 p.m. with the highlights of the 2026 budget being presented.
