Construction underway at former movie theatre site

Some activity has finally started on a piece of land in Sarnia sitting empty since 2017.

The city issued a $14 million permit last month for a six-storey, 58 unit apartment building at the former Famous Players movie theatre at 1450 London Road.

The property has been vacant since 2013 and the former Famous Players movie theatre and a nearby restaurant were demolished four years later.

In August of last year, Southside Construction announced plans for a total of four apartment buildings at the site.

A $700,000 permit was also issued to transform an existing vacant commercial space into a new optometry office and leased unit at 901 Exmouth Street near Indian Road.

A total of 38 permits were issued in November totaling just over $21 million, bringing the year-to-date total to $140.6 million. That's about $26 million less than at this time last year.

The monthly statistics included four permits for a single-family dwelling, bringing the year-to-date total for new homes to 25.
