Petrolia soccer fields to be called Tank Street Heritage Field

The new soccer fields in Petrolia have a new name.

Petrolia Town Council recently approved a motion to rename the park facilities Tank Street Heritage Field.

Councillor Liz Welsh brought forward the recommendation.

"I just think it delineates it from the community centre and identifies it as its own separate place," said Welsh. "I think maybe that's important for emergency people, as well as, Tank Street gets very little recognition and it's kind of an interesting and important street in Petrolia."

Staff had also suggested naming the site Heritage Park, as an homage to the original name of the community centre.

Residents were also invited to make their suggestions for the property through an online survey.

Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities Julie Bullock said the name identifies specifically the soccer fields, north of the Petrolia YMCA.

"Because areas of the rest of the park already, the playground has a specific name, the splash pad is named the Petrolia Kiwanis Splash Pad, so it's basically specifically the soccer fields, but I'm sure it will be used to reference a lot of the facility as well," said Bullock.

Construction began in the fall of 2024 and the fields will be ready in time for the 2026 season.

Updated signage with the new name is expected to be installed early this year.
