LPH issues third cold weather alert in past week

These bitter temperatures have prompted Lambton Public Health (LPH) to issue another cold weather alert, which will be in place until Wednesday.

It's the third such alert in the past week.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Karalyn Dueck said it's based on the latest forecast from Environment Canada which predicts the temperature to meet the threshold of -15°C overnight.

LPH is telling local agencies that provide shelter and assistance to people experiencing homelessness to prepare for an increase in demand.

We're being told to dress in layers and shield exposed areas from the wind such as the head, neck, and face, and limit time spent outdoors.

LPH said overexposure to cold can be hazardous and even life-threatening. Symptoms of hypothermia include pale skin, lethargy, confusion, excessive shivering, and hallucinations.

For more information, visit LambtonPublicHealth.ca. or call Lambton County Social Services at 519-344-2062, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

For assistance outside of these hours, contact the Good Shepherd’s Lodge at 519-344-1679.

A list of warming centres is available on LPH's website.
