Habitat, River City gearing up CNOY fundraiser

Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton is asking residents to put on their winter gear and walk in The Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY).

It's an annual fundraising walk to support those facing hunger, hurt, and homelessness in Sarnia-Lambton.

CEO of Habitat Sarnia-Lambton, David Waters, said this year's fundraising goal is $75,000.

"It's our fifth year (doing the walk), it's a family-friendly walk. It's two kilometre and five kilometre we walk around Sarnia Bay," said Waters. "Our funds go directly to our build program to build homes for people in need."

Since 2011, CNOY has raised over $75 million across Canada in 190 Canadian communities. The family-friendly event happens every February, and nearly 40,000 Canadians across the country brave the cold for the walk.

About 250 walkers and 35 teams are expected to participate in this years walk. Community sponsors include Finch Lincoln and Smith Funeral Home and Family Centre.

"So they (participants) can register online, and then they pick a team name, so the team members register, and then they ask friends and family to join their team and fundraise," said Waters. "(To donate) They can give to a walker, or they can come right into Habitat and donate if they like."

The walk happens on February 28, and begins and ends at the Polish Hall, located at 173 Exmouth Street in Sarnia.

Participants can walk a 2k or 5k route and will be able to celebrate their efforts together with a small meal from four local chefs at the finish line.

River City Vineyard is also participating in the chilly fundraiser and as of Friday, January 30, was sitting at 47 per cent of its $35,000 fundraising goal.

Funds will go towards supporting the shelter and community centre.

Participants are reminded to dress warmly, and have good boots or waterproof shoes.
