St. Clair Township golf course to reopen after flood damage

A Mooretown golf course will reopen on Wednesday, after experiencing significant damage in recent storms.

In a social media post, St. Clair Parkway Golf Club said it was closed on Monday and Tuesday.

"Our turf team needs these days to repair the washouts around the bridges and cart paths as well as cleaning up debris from the flooding around the golf course," the message read.

The club said its rubber ducky races planned on April 18 are being postponed.

"We need time to cleanup the gravel and debris that washed into the creek. We will announce a new date soon," the post said.

St. Clair Township Director of Community Services Kendall Lindsay told Sarnia News Today they've gotten used to repairing the clubs five crossings when the water levels in Baby Creek rise.

"Typically, this will happen two [to] three times a year, every year, and mainly in the spring," Lindsay said. "So, it will wash some gravel and then we basically have to put everything back. So, the repairs just mean putting everything back, which usually takes a couple of days, depending how much the water came up."

Lindsay said the damage often looks much worse than it is.

"Over the years we've changed things," he said. "We've gone away from bridge styles, to more culvert styles, so they tend to wash out a bit more, but they don't wash away. We could have lost a whole bridge before, where now, everything stays put, we just have to put things back."

During his time in the role, Lindsay said the worst damage the club experienced was during Hurricane Sandy, in late October 2012.

"It was a lot of water. So, that was probably the worst of the ones I've seen," Lindsay said. "2024 and 2023 were two summers in a row where we had a lot of rain in July and August, and that was something I'd never seen before on the property... where the water levels got up mid-summer. Normally, it's aways this time of year."

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority said it was still monitoring conditions across the watershed on Tuesday, after 35 to 80 millimetres of precipitation was received over the Easter weekend.

Residents were being told to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions.
