The City of Sarnia is planning an information session next week, to help anyone thinking of running in the upcoming 2026 Ontario Municipal Election.
The session, delivered by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, will take place on Tuesday, April 21, at 5 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.
City Clerk Amy Burkhart said they'll be discussing several things related to the campaign process, requirements and roles.
"The campaign process does have some very specific rules, processes and requirements to ensure compliance with the Municipal Elections Act. So, we are hosting the session to help any prospective candidates or third-party advertisers better understand the process, and participate with a full understanding," Burkhart said.
Topics covered will include:
Eligibility rules for candidates and third-party advertisers.
Filing to run for election via the nomination process.
Campaign finances such as rules, expenses and contribution limits.
Compliance audit committee roles and responsibilities.
Registration is not required.
Nominations for the 2026 municipal election open on May 1, 2026.
So far, one seat has been declared open for the next term.
Veteran City/County Councillor Dave Boushy announced his retirement from politics earlier this week.
