International students targeted in fraud scheme

A dozen criminal charges have been laid in an immigration scheme that defrauded international students out of an estimated $126,000.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said the investigation began in February 2025 after Lambton College submitted a tip.

It's alleged two people took money from international students, claiming it would be used to pay their tuition fees. The victims were provided with fraudulent enrollment documents.

Investigators interviewed the victims, however, CBSA did not specify how many people were defrauded.

Two suspects, from Cambridge and London, were charged on June 2 with four counts of fraud over $5,000, four counts of uttering forged documents, and four counts of counselling misrepresentation.

The Cambridge resident was scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in London on July 10.

The 35-year-old London resident is believed to have fled the country and is wanted on an arrest warrant.
