The Town of Plympton-Wyoming has purchased approximately four acres of land in the Blue Coast Heights area, north of Camlachie, to build a regional pump station.
Mayor Gary Atkinson said the land purchase price was $345,000.
"We're pleased that we've now purchased the property, [and] we can move forward with the Wastewater Master Plan," Atkinson said. "This project is something that we've needed. It reduces the stress on the existing wastewater system and will support potential future expansion."
The town said the future pump station is planned to improve wastewater system performance and reliability, increase servicing capacity for existing residents, enable and support future community growth, and address long-term infrastructure needs identified through planning.
A master plan final report, released in 2022, acts as a guide for how the municipality can meet current and anticipated demands over the next 20 years. The town's planning department estimates the municipality will grow by 20 per cent every five years.
"We're not at the exceeding capacity right now, but we're planning for the future," Atkinson said.
The proposed project is also expected to include upgrades along Queen Street West, including improvements to the roadway and related servicing infrastructure.
Construction is anticipated to begin in 2028.
Atkinson said the municipality will seek government support for the project and is looking at available grants.
