Sarnia Community Foundation seeking new board members

The Sarnia Community Foundation (SCF) is looking for new board members to join the organization for 2027.

The SCF's mandate is to create a vibrant, inclusive, and livable Lambton County by working with donors to grow and manage permanent and short-term funds including scholarships.

Grants are made to projects and programs that are dedicated to making the community a better place.

Executive Director Mike Barron said board members must commit to serving a three-year term and be willing to consider serving up to a six-year term.

He said they must be at least 18-years-old and live and/or work in Lambton County to be considered.

"We're a small team," said Barron. "There's myself, Amy Vasey is our fund developer, and Irene Clarke looks after the office and our grants administrator. And so we report to a board. We have 12 board members and a treasurer. And so this year, members will have termed out on their board position."

Barron said it's a governance board.

"They're just making sure that myself and the operation is staying within the guardrails," he said "There are eight board meetings throughout the year, and then there's four committees. So a board member would be asked to maybe sit on one of those committees, and committees meet four times a year. So really, you're giving up maybe 12 to 15 hours, maybe 16 hours of time in the year. One or two events that we have are grants presentations and our women of excellence. And then we have a bunch of fund holders that have events."

Those with expertise in financial management, risk management, healthcare, mental wellness, communications, media, fund development, not-for-profit governance and education are encouraged to apply.

The SCF was founded in 1983, has supported more than 150 local organizations and has returned millions of dollars to the community through grants, scholarships, and leadership programs.
