Sting Subdues Storm

The Sarnia Sting further solidified its hold on a playoff spot with a 5-2 win over the Guelph Storm at the RBC Centre Sunday afternoon.

Rookie Jordan Kyrou's 12th goal of the season just eight seconds into the third period proved to be the game winner.

After being outplayed and outshot 20-6 in the second period the Sting stormed out of the gate in the third with three straight goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

Just a couple of minutes after Kyrou put the Sting up 3-1, Davis Brown scored his 17th to extend the lead. Nikita Korostelev added his team leading 22nd of the year midway through the period on a rebound off a wraparound attempt by former Storm Stephen Pierog.

The Sting had dominated the opening period to take a 2-0 lead.

The defending OHL champions got the lone goal in the middle frame when Swiss born Pius Suter scored his first of two.

Patrick White returned to the Sting lineup with Brandon Lindberg not dressing due to injury and had the opening goal and an assist. White was named third star, Kyrou was second star, also with a goal and an assist and goaltender Justin Fazio received first star honours stopping 37 of 39 Storm shots.

Korostelev also had an assist and now has 50 points in 51 games. Pavel Zacha had an assist. He has five goals and four assists in eight games since returning from injury.

The Sting (28-28-4-3) remains in seventh place in the Western Conference, five points behind Kitchener and ten ahead of Saginaw with five games left in the regular season.

Sarnia is home to the Spirit Friday and travels to Sault Ste. Marie Saturday.

The Sting will clinch a playoff berth with just one more win, or one more loss by Saginaw, Windsor and Plymouth.
