INTERVIEW: Alvinston Indians Seeking New Nickname

Alvinston Minor Baseball is looking for a new nickname as it aims to move away from the controversial "Indians" moniker that's been used for over 50 years.

President Andy Triest says it comes down to respect for First Nations people.

He says the issue came to light during the recent Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays playoff series.

A First Nations member went to court to try and block the Indians from using their name and logo in Canada.

"It's important that our kids can go to visiting ballparks and just play the game that they want to play," says Triest. "Perhaps because of their logo or team name people have questions. They should just be able to go to those parks and play. So, we're trying to take the high road here, the pros haven't made any changes but we want to make a change for the kids and do what's politically correct."

Triest says a new name hasn't been chosen yet, but adds the kids will be involved in the re-branding process.

He says they need nearly $30,000 to get new team uniforms.
