New college athletics centre to host varsity basketball's best

Tickets are selling fast for the OCAA Men's Basketball Championship being held at Lambton College from March 6 to 8.

The Lambton Lions are hosting the event for the first time, welcoming the best varsity basketball teams from across Ontario.

Lambton will be one of eight squads participating in the tournament which is about 90 per cent sold out.

Head Coach James Grant is excited, and looking forward to showcasing the college's brand new athletics centre.

"They're going to be able to see the best basketball in the province, without a doubt," said Grant. "I think the athleticism and the ability of these players is just going to wow people in the community. If they've been to our games so far, they obviously saw us play at home, and we have a really competitive team. Having the top eight teams here for a one weekend winner-take-all is going to be great."

Basketball legend Leo Rautins, who has been named Honourary Chair of the tournament, will join fans in cheering for the Lions as they defend the den in their opening game.

It will see teams eliminated in a single game knockout format, with the gold medal game scheduled for 3 p.m. on March 8.

You can buy tickets at www.lclions.ca or at the college.

This season, Lambton finished sixth place in the West with a 12-8 record and 24 points. They won seven straight to close out the regular season.
