Spitfires swoop in for 7-5 victory against Sarnia Sting

Another loss for the Sarnia Sting is being attributed to players giving up too many opportunities and not coming in strong enough when they needed to.

The Sting lost to the Windsor Spitfires at Progressive Auto Sales Arena Friday night 7-5.

The Spits completed the first goal of the night. Minutes later, Theo Hill scored Sarnia's first goal of the evening with assists from Nolan DeGurse and Ashton Reesor, which tied things up at the end of the first period.

Windsor came in strong in the second with three goals. Sting defenceman Andrei Malyavin scored in the second with assists from Ty Voit and Nolan Dann.

The Sting made a comeback in the third after Windsor scored two more goals. Nolan Burke and Nolan Dann scored two more for the Sting during power plays.

Ben Lalkin scored the final goal of the evening for Sarnia with an assist from Nolan Dillingham. The Spits solidified their victory with their seventh goal of the night to end the game.

In a post-game interview, Sting Head Coach Alan Letang said it seems to be the same story week after week.

"We give them opportunities to beat us. We hand them opportunities," he said. "We didn't play hard enough for long enough. We waited until we were behind and got a little bit desperate and decided to play."

The Sting lost to the Soo Greyhounds 2-0 last Sunday, on November 29. The loss followed a rebound against Flint as the Sting beat the Firebirds last Saturday after a loss the night before.

Letang said although some players performed well, it was out of desperation.

"We finally got desperate and we finally got to the net so that's positive but it's only positive if we do it from the first period to the third period."

The Sting will be at Budweiser Gardens Saturday night to play the London Knights.

Letang said the team will need to forget Friday's game and step up to the challenge Saturday.

"The nice thing is, usually you don't have to motivate people to play London," he said. "We've rebounded before. Last Friday against Flint we didn't play our greatest, [we] went into Flint and won."

You can hear Saturday's action live on CHOK. Pregame coverage starts at 3:30 p.m. and puck drop is set for 4 p.m.
