Sarnia hosting Gold Bat Invitational again after 2024 success

For a second straight year, Sarnia will play host the Canadian Amateur Baseball Central (CABC) Gold Bat Invitational.

The tournament made its return in 2024 and was held for the first time since 1999.

It features the top 12 men's baseball teams in Ontario, including the hometown Sarnia Brigade who captured a silver medal after losing to Newmarket in last year's final.

Along with Newmarket, the Brigade will be competing against the Windsor Athletics, Leaside Leafs, Etobicoke Rangers, Windsor Stars, Brampton Royals, Ilderton Riverhawks, Thornhill Reds, Tecumseh Thunder, Burlington Brants, and Erindale Cardinals.

Brigade Manager James Grant is confident in this year's squad.

"We've basically returned the core that won us a silver medal last year," said Grant. "We're looking forward to it. You never really know this early in the season, obviously guys are just getting going. I think we have a team that can compete. When you get into some of these games against the other top teams, it comes down to one or two mistakes or one or two big plays. Hopefully they go our way this weekend."

Grant said visiting teams are always impressed with the quality of Sarnia-Lambton's facilities, calling them some of the best in all of Ontario.

Sarnia will host Tecumseh at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 13 at Errol Russell Park to kick off the three-day event.

They'll shift over to Blackwell Park to face Erindale at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and back to Errol Russell for a 5:30 p.m. games against Thornhill Saturday night. Games will also take place at Eric MacKenzie Field in Courtright.

The public is welcome to attend, free of charge.

If you can't make it out, the games at Errol Russell Park will be broadcast online throughout the weekend.

A full schedule can be found on the CABC website.
