Sting lose big in home opener

The Sarnia Sting had a devastating loss during Friday's home opener against the Windsor Spitfires 8-1 at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

Windsor's Max Brocklehurst kicked off the scoring just before the end of the first period at 19 minutes 44 seconds.

The Stings first and only goal didn't come until the third period at 10 minutes and 46 seconds by Jack Van Volsen in a power play.

Matthew Manza and Ryan Brown each got an assist on the goal.

Head Coach Alan Letang said the loss was disappointing.

"We kind of fractured a little bit as a team. We tried to go individual, we're not skilled enough to be individual. We have to play as a group of five and stay connected," he said.

Letang said they needed to find a push.

"We have to be able to think under pressure, we've got to be able to react under pressure and we hesitate right now. We have to find that confidence," he said. "It's game one, we're going to get better, they're going to work hard."

To start the game Evan Maillet was in net and made 15 saves before Patrick Quinlan stepped in.

Quinlan ended up making three saves.

The Sting were also outshot by the Spitfires 26-22.

Sarnia is back in action on Sunday, September 21 in Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Greyhounds.

You can catch the game live on CHOK (1070AM/103.9 FM) at 2 p.m.
