Push For National Seniors Strategy

Health care and retirement security for seniors is top of mind as doctors and unions push for change.

A public meeting held in Windsor saw leaders talk about creating a national seniors strategy.

Canadian Medical Association President Dr. Chris Simpson says our 1960s health system is outdated. "We have a health system that was designed to treat people who are acutely ill, but today the landscape is one of chronic disease -- people have dementia , diabetes, heart failure," Simpson says. "There's not enough community and home capacity to help people manage disease."

The number of Canadians 65 and over is expected to double in the next 15 years, all the more reason they say to create a seniors strategy now.

Also discussed, the increasing number of seniors struggling to make ends meet. "The retirement security is a fundamental issue facing the country. Too many people are going to be retiring without adequate income," says Canadian Labour Congress President Hassan Yussuff.
