Catholic Board Finding Ways To Balance

The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board has passed a balanced budget for the coming year, but it didn't come easy.

Superintendent of Business Mario Iatonna says the board is still facing declining enrollment, which has forced a reduction in teachers. "We went line-by-line through the budget. We also looked at our budget surplus and we used some of that surplus as well, to the tune of $1.75-million."

The board didn't get hit as hard as it thought it might by Ontario's 1% to 2% reduction in student funding.

However, Iatonna expects the province to continue adjusting its grants based on accommodations, and with 3,000 surplus spaces in local Catholic schools, he believes more consolidation will have to be done within the board over the next year.
