Memorial Cup Logo Unveiled

The 2017 Mastercard Memorial Cup logo has been unveiled.

It features the Lancaster Bomber, and a poppy to signify the important military history of the tournament. The Memorial Cup was first played after WWI in memory of the fallen soldiers, many of whom once played on Canadian hockey teams.

Host Committee Military Liaison Mike Akpata says to see the poppy and the Lancaster on the logo invokes a lot of emotion.

"It is what makes this area so wonderful that we can now put out to the rest of the country that we understand, we honour the memories of people and we are a community that recognizes where it came from and where it's going," says Akpata.

The Lancaster Bomber was once on display in Jackson Park and was chosen to represent Windsor for the tournament.

"It's so fitting that the storied aircraft that has such a long history in our community is a large piece of the logo," says Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

The 99th edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup will take place May 18-28, 2017, featuring the host Spitfires along with the champions of the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
