Kingsville Looking To Increase Crossing Guard Safety

The Town of Kingsville is starting a new pilot project to increase safety for students and crossing guards.

After a number of "close calls" this year the town looked into best practices from other municipalities and will test a few in the coming weeks.

Human Resources Manager Angela Lonsbery says they will implement two initiatives at one crossing later this month. For a four week period the crossing guard will be equipped with a flashing crossing guard sign and will also place a pylon in the middle of the street to alert drivers of the crossing.

"Right now they have the crossing guard paddle but it's just a simple stop sign. This new enhanced system will actually have some LED lights that will actually flash and draw the attention of the drivers," says Lonsbery.

She's asking motorists to be aware of the crossing guards.

"Please just slow down, stop. It's the safety of your community, it's the safety of our children and of course its the safety of our employees and our crossing guards that are going out there and serving our community," says Lonsbery.

Lonsbery says if these initiatives have positive results they will look to implement them at all six crossings throughout the town.
