LaSalle Residents Eager To Celebrate Canada 150

Residents in the Town of LaSalle are jumping at the opportunity to be a part of the Canada 150 mosaic project.

The project is part of an national art compilation by Lewis Lavoie that will be on display at the Vollmer Complex for many years to comes.

Those participating in the project will have the opportunity to paint whatever they would like on a 4x4 tile that will make up the larger mosaic. The tiles will make up a picture of the Griffin, the ship that the explorer Robert de La Salle travelled down the Detroit River on.

Dawn Hadre, the communications officer with the municipality, says there are 450 mosaic tiles available and they are going fast.

"The artists have already painted some tiles in order to have the outline of the ship, so we have 450 tiles that we are asking the community and the schools to help us paint," says Hadre.

Public painting sessions are happening Thursday and Friday night and Saturday morning. It takes about an hour to paint the 4x4 tile. Pre-registration is required because they only have a limited amount of tiles. No artistic background is required.

The project will be completed Saturday but will not be unveiled until Canada Day 2017.
