A new stroke unit at Windsor Regional Hospital is expected to improve patient outcomes in the region.
The 16-bed unit located on the eighth floor of the Ouellette Campus will focus on a new standardized level of care that has proven beneficial at other hospitals across Ontario.
Neurologist Dr. Michael Winger says the move allows the hospital to concentrate all local stroke care expertise on one floor.
"We want to make sure that it is as efficient as possible, that the processes are followed efficiently and that we get patients, if they require rehabilitation or any outpatient rehab, we get them there as soon as possible," says Winger.
All stroke patients who may have been directed to Leamington District Memorial Hospital or the Met campus will now come to the Ouellette campus. The interprofessional stroke team on the unit is made up of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists.
