Windsor Conducting Sign Bylaw Review

The City of Windsor is conducting a review of its sign bylaw to establish guidelines for digital and LED signs.

"We'll look at how bright they are, hours of operations, third party, second party advertising requirements, size requirement and transition and animation," says Adam Coates, urban planner with the City of Windsor.

Councillors decided Monday night to deny the request from Pattison Outdoor Advertising to erect a digital sign on Walker Rd. as part of a pilot project while the city is establishing those guidelines. It was denied after city staff and police voiced concerns of distracted driving.

"At the end of the day we'll just have to hold the fort a little bit and delay it a bit and see what we can do moving forward," says Sid Catalano with Pattison Outdoor Advertising.

Catalano says he's disappointed they couldn't work with the city but says digital signs are coming to Windsor one way or another.

"We're now in the digital age and we have the means to control the concerns people have, concerns being very bright illumination. We have the means to control that," says Catalano.

The review is expected to take up to 12 months to complete.
