Rain Could Cause Flooding In Essex Region

Potential downpours in shoreline areas within Essex County could cause flooding and drainage problems for some residents.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued a water conditions statement to say there is an enhanced possibility that Pelee Island, Leamington, Kingsville, Essex and Amherstburg could experience flooding issues Friday night and into Saturday.

The conservation authority says current winds are forecast to reach of 40 km/hr, with gusts up to 65 km/hr.  Environment Canada briefly issued a rainfall warning for Windsor-Essex Friday night. It has since ended but a special weather statement warning of rainfall amounts between 30 to 50 mm remains in place.

The there is a possibility of near shore erosion with wave overtopping and spray, ERCA says. In the areas of direct wave impact, there is also the possibility of breakwall damage.

Residents are urged to take extra caution and avoid shoreline areas. The conservation authority says the combination of slippery banks, waves, waves overtopping breakwalls and fast moving water can be dangerous.
