Windsor's Downtown Mission says it will find space for all homeless

The Downtown Mission in Windsor is at overcapacity but is making it clear that it won't turn anybody away during this deep freeze.

Development Officer Jim Douglas said the sanctuary shelter at 875 Ouellette Avenue will provide safe shelter for all and all will be accommodated and protected from this harsh, record-breaking cold. Douglas said The Mission has 103 beds but has 115 guests. He added that staff will send the homeless trying to get out of the cold to other shelters in the city if needed.

There is a concern that people will be left to fend for themselves because of perceived capacity issues at the Downtown Mission.

"No one, and I mean no one, will be turned away to try and survive in this weather," said Ron Dunn, executive director of The Downtown Mission. "The Mission will step up and find space for everyone who needs and wants it."

The shelter at 664 Victoria Avenue is also open between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. for people without homes to get in and out of the cold. Hot meals are available as well as activities.

Call the Downtown Mission at 519-973-5573 if you see a vulnerable individual who appears to need help.
