Firefighters demonstrate why distracted and impaired driving is deadly

If you're at the Lowe's on Catherine Street in Windsor Saturday, you might see what looks like a pretty devastating accident.

Firefighters are presenting a mock vehicle rollover between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services figured with school back in session starting Tuesday, now was a good time to demonstrate the potential consequences of impaired or distracted driving.

"We want to remind students and adults that making smart, but very simple decisions can easily prevent tragedies like these crashes from happening in and around our city," said Fire Chief Stephen Laforet.

The display will demonstrate what it looks like when a vehicle is involved in a fatal impaired driving crash. Firefighters will also show what tools they use to extricate and treat victims.

The service hopes by providing a realistic demonstration, students and adults will think twice about getting behind the wheel while impaired or getting into a vehicle where the driver has taken drugs or alcohol or distracted.

A fire safety booth will also be set up with information and giveaways.
