Train derails in southwest Detroit

Authorities in Detroit are working to clear a derailed train on the city's southwest side.

According to a release sent to BlackburnNewsWindsor.com by the Detroit Fire Department, a CN freight train headed for Toledo, Ohio derailed on the Conrail tracks near Clark Avenue near Michigan Avenue in the city's Mexicantown district. The fire department said, out of the 12 cars that overturned, five were marked as carrying hazardous material. All were empty at the time of the incident.

"The Detroit Fire Department Haz-Mat Unit declared the incident as a Level 1, no hazardous material," read the release. "At this time there are no reports of any injuries and DFD has determined there is no health risk to residents in the area."

It was not clear if the train originated in Detroit or elsewhere.

Crews from the fire department and Conrail are on scene to determine the safest way to clear the cars from the scene. Several of the cars are on elevated tracks spanning Scotten Avenue and Vinewood Street. The city of Detroit has closed these streets between Michigan Avenue and Brandon Street as a safety precaution.

Cleanup is expected to last into Thursday evening.
