Academie Ste. Cecile student to represent region in Washington D.C. spelling bee

A 13-year-old student from Academie Ste. Cecile will represent Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent at this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

Over the weekend, Rishi Damarla correctly spelt the winning word, "grout", in a competition involving 28 students from 14 local schools.

The competition, sponsored by the WFCU Credit Union, went 50 rounds at the St. Clair College Centre for the Arts Saturday.

Damarla also won a $200 post-secondary school scholarship from the WFCU Credit Union, A one-year subscription for the Meriam-Webster Unabridged Online dictionary, a one-year the Britannica online premium subscription, and the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award.

The competition in Washington D.C. will be broadcast on ESPN channels May 29 to May 31.
