Construction on the Gordie Howe International Bridge project is on schedule despite the global pandemic.
Much of the work has continued while keeping in mind public health recommendations. Many of the ongoing projects could continue because it is taking place outdoors and not in the confines of a building.
"We continue to make progress, there has been a need to shift some aspects of the schedule to accommodate mitigation measures in place for COVID but Bridging North America is continuing to work away on that," said Heather Grondin, vice president of communications for the Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority.
Grondin said the project is still on track to be completed in 2024.
"There's a lot of time in our construction schedule and we do have time if things need to be adjusted to do so and meet our existing target of the end of 2024 for opening," said Grondin.
To date all preparatory work at the Canadian Point of Entry is complete. This summer, work will continue on the site including the installation of over 150,000 wick drains.
At the bridge site, tower footing work is underway and structure construction is expected to be visible on the ground later this year.
