Health Unit updates order for farms

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has updated its public health orders for workplaces that employ temporary foreign workers.

The changes were made to ensure more outbreaks don't happen in that sector during a second wave of coronavirus spread.

The updates include ensuring employees work exclusively at one location, that employees who live together also work together, and keeping a record of when all employees enter Canada.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said most of the farm owners and operators are already following most of these guidelines. These changes are being made simply to clarify the order and ensure people are not becoming complacent.

"It is very important that we prevent any outbreaks in these farms and in these facilities because it can easily spread, not only in the farm but also through the farm to our community," said Dr. Ahmed.

There are no outbreaks at any local agricultural settings.

On Wednesday morning, the health unit reported an additional eight cases of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex. Among the new cases were three close contacts and one community-acquired case. Four of the cases are still under investigation.

There are now 38 active cases in the community with one person in the hospital.
