Port Windsor donates winter socks for homeless

With the temperatures as cold as they are, many homeless people in Windsor are at serious risk of frostbite and other health-related problems.

Port Windsor hopes to help some stay healthier by donating 850 pairs of socks to four homeless shelters in the city.

That is one pair of socks for each worker at Port Windsor.

The socks were handed over to the Downtown Mission, Street Help, the Salvation Army, and Welcome Centre Shelter for Women and Families Thursday morning.

"As we run in and out of warm buildings and return to our heated homes, let us remember that there are those who have few options to hide from the cold," read a release from the Port.

While socks are the most needed clothing item, especially during the winter months, they are the least donated.

"Many people and organizations generously donate winter clothing and money to the homeless, but time and time again, studies show that the most desperately need, and the most appreciated gift is a new, clean pair of warm socks," continued the release.

Socks 4 Souls Canada said one in five medical problems suffered by homeless people is related to foot care. New socks reduce the risk of frostbite, cellulitis, impetigo, fungal infection, trench foot, and skin breakdown.
