Take Back the Night goes ahead Thursday

The Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee of Windsor-Essex County wants residents to keep this statistic in mind; there were 2,596 calls to Windsor Police in 2019 regarding intimate partner violence.

There were 2,326 calls to women's shelters.

The committee will host the 12th annual Take Back The Night event in Charles Clark Square in downtown Windsor Thursday night. The event starts at 7 p.m.

For those who want to participate from home, the event will also be live-streamed on Facebook.

This year, the theme is "Take action now - your voice has power."

Each year, the event raises public awareness about sexual and intimate partner abuse. It invites all residents to recognize gender-based violence is unacceptable.

The first event of its kind was for women only. It was held in the United Kingdom in 1877, but the first event in North America was in 1978 in San Francisco.
