The COVID-19 death toll continues to rise with another nine deaths reported in the region.
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported nine deaths among individuals 60 or older who lived in the community. There have been 519 deaths in Windsor-Essex linked to the virus since the start of the pandemic.
The health unit also recorded an increase of 202 new cases. This number does not represent the true burden of disease in the community because testing is currently restricted to vulnerable individuals and health care professionals.
Local hospitals are reporting 132 admissions who have tested positive for the virus.
Windsor Regional Hospital has 106 positive patients in its care and 72 have been admitted primarily due to complications of COVID-19. There are 13 positive patients in the intensive care unit and 11 of them are being treated primarily for COVID-19. Of those in the ICU, 10 are unvaccinated, one is partially vaccinated, and two are fully vaccinated.
Erie Shores Healthcare has seven patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 in its care. Only one is in the hospital to be treated for another reason other than COVID-19.
There are also 19 patients at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare who have tested positive for the virus.
The health unit is monitoring outbreaks within six hospital units. There are two at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, two at Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette campus and two at Windsor Regional Hospital Met campus.
There are also outbreaks being monitored at 26 long-term care or retirement homes and 32 community congregate settings. Outbreaks at other workplaces are no longer being followed due to current testing eligibility.
