Tecumseh rail crossing getting a makeover

The federal government is helping improve a busy railway crossing in Tecumseh.

The at-grade VIA Rail crossing on Lesperance Road near Tecumseh Road East is getting a $2.1-million upgrade this summer to improve safety.

Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara indicated this has been on the town's agenda for a long time.

"It is very dangerous for tractor-trailers in particular where actually the supports on the trailers actually hit the summit of the track itself," said McNamara.

The project will modernize the crossing to ensure the gradient meets the current safety standards.

The town is also taking this opportunity to make the crossing a more attractive public space. The new streetscaping and other upgrades will beautify the entry point to the downtown core.

"Now finally, after we've been talking for quite a few years in terms of the streetscaping piece as we started the CIP now, they are going to see what the potential is going to be in terms of developing that core area," said McNamara.

The federal government is investing $1,027,200 in the project, and the town is contributing the rest.

Construction is set to start in mid-August and will take around ten weeks to complete. Detours will be in place around the project area.
