ERCA issues shoreline condition statement

Strong wind in the forecast over the next day could cause some flooding or shoreline erosion along Lake Erie.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a shoreline condition statement for the Lake Erie Shoreline, including Pelee Island.

Starting Wednesday night, wind speeds will increase to reach a sustained speed of up to 45 km/hr with gusts reaching 80 km/hr. Winds are then expected to shift to out of the south-west and then west while maintaining similar speeds and dissipate by late Thursday evening.

These conditions are below ERCA Flood Watch thresholds, however with elevated lake levels the authority advises the risk of flooding and erosion along lake Erie is possible.

The forecasted conditions are expected to dissipate by 9:00 p.m. Thursday.

People are encouraged to take extra caution to avoid areas where flooding is occurring as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind events.
