The Chair of the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association wants to run for Windsor City Council in Ward 3.
Brian Yeomans is the first candidate in that ward to file nomination papers.
He is taking a leave of absence from his position with the BIA.
"There is so much potential for the downtown," said Yeomans. "I see improvements every day, and that is why I felt it necessary to enter the race, to continue the hard work that has been done over the past eight years."
Yeomans said he wants to grow the residential footprint in Windsor's core by implementing a community improvement plan to encourage mixed-use development and medium-rise condominiums. He's also focused on improving public transit and initiatives that make streets safer.
He also said addressing Windsor's homelessness, opioid, and mental health struggles are top priorities.

No one has filed to run yet in Wards 2 or 8, but there are a total of 20 candidates running in the city's eight other wards.
Earlier this week, Councillor Jim Morrison became the second incumbent to announce plans to run again in October. He represents Ward 10. Jeewan Gill in Ward 7 is also running for a second term.
The deadline to file nomination papers to run in the October 24 municipal election is August 19.
