Storms prompt ERCA to issue watershed statement

With some areas of Windsor-Essex getting heavy rain as part of Wednesday's storms, the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued an alert.

ERCA has issued a watershed conditions statement for Wednesday afternoon and early evening, due to concern about standing water being caused by heavy rain falling over a short period.

Environment Canada had been tracking a set of strong thunderstorms that had moved through the area from Michigan. The storms had the potential of downpours dumping as much as 40 millimetres of rain. Dangerously high wind gusts were also possible.

"This amount and duration of rainfall fall below Flood Watch thresholds," said ERCA Water Resources Engineer Tian Martin. "However, due to the combination of above-average lake levels and forecasted rainfall, a watershed conditions statement will remain in effect."

That statement is set to expire at 8 p.m. Wednesday, but it can be extended if needed.
