Deadline set for Windsor-Essex secondary school immunizations

High school students in Windsor-Essex are asked to ensure their immunizations are up to date.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has set a deadline of 6 p.m. on September 12 for secondary students to provide missing immunization records to the health unit, catch up with any missing vaccines, or provide a valid exemption. Failure to do so may result in the student being suspended for up to 20 days.

Ontario law requires that all immunization records be current, and public health units are required to maintain records for all students enrolled in the region's schools.

"As part of the continued work to prevent the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases, the WECHU completed a review of all secondary student immunization records in June, and initial notices were provided to individuals with records considered to be incomplete," read a media release from the health unit. "These students were either overdue for one or more vaccines, or they have not submitted their updated records to the health unit."

The WECHU said it sent out a total of 7,858 notices.

The health unit is offering immunization clinics at its offices in Windsor and Leamington and will continue to hold them across the region throughout the rest of the summer. Parents can book an appointment on the health unit's official website.
