Man shot by Windsor police identified

A man who was shot by a Windsor police officer during an altercation downtown Monday afternoon has been identified.

The incident happened at around 2:20 p.m. when Windsor police were called about a person reportedly wielding a machete. The incident ended after the suspect was shot by an officer. The man was taken to hospital and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was called.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the SIU confirmed the man had died in hospital Monday night. The agency has since identified him as 70-year-old Allan Andkilde.

"When officers arrived they located an adult male in the street with a weapon," a release issued Monday from Windsor police read. "During the course of the interaction with the subject, a Windsor Police Service officer discharged their firearm. The subject was transported to hospital with what are believed to be life-threatening-injuries."

The SIU said that one Windsor officer used a conductive energy weapon (taser), on the man during the interaction and another shot him.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Wednesday.
