New home for Provincial Offences Court unveiled

The Provincial Offenses Court has a new permanent home after being displaced by fire nearly three years ago.

The courts where people go to pay speeding tickets or other provincial fines were located in the West Court building in downtown Windsor. A fire broke out at the facility in November 2019 and has been vacant ever since.

Now the provincial offences court is located on the fourth floor of 400 City Hall Square.

"It's a lot more of a one-stop-shop now if they are coming here to pay a ticket they can also go to Service Ontario if they have to renew their license, we have Service Canada on the first floor so keeping everything in one location is a lot more convenient," said Dana Paladino, deputy city solicitor with the City of Windsor.

The fourth floor was renovated to include three courtrooms, justice of the peace chambers, and payment kiosks. Paladino says the courtrooms have all the necessary technology to accommodate people who choose to attend court remotely.

"It can function as a hybrid courtroom meaning that any given court participant can be in person or participate remotely from their computers," said Paladino.

The move also brings the city’s legal department under one roof, allowing for better utilization of resources.
