New report highlights in-demand jobs in the region

If you're looking for work or a new career, have you considered being a general labourer or machine operator?

Those are just two in-demand jobs identified in this year's Workforce WindsorEssex Local Labour Market Plan.

The report examines local labour statistics that offer insight into the current job market and ways to expand it further.

Other in-demand jobs it identified include bookkeeper, welder/fitter, and restaurant worker.

According to the report, employers have difficulty finding people with hard skills, including computer literacy and written communication, and soft skills, like sales experience and leadership skills.

Drawing on information from the 2016 census, the report says local workers overall have lower levels of post-secondary education than the rest of the province. The percentage of those who retired between 2016 and 2021 has also risen by 18 per cent.

As for newcomers to the region, the majority are of working age, and the report points out they could fill labour shortages.

Recommendations include encouraging more businesses to work with educational institutions to offer on-site training and skills development and promoting occupation-specific language training to integrate newcomers into the workforce.
