Feds and Province meeting to discuss commission recommendations

Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra is already meeting with his provincial counterparts to work on the recommendations coming from the Public Order Emergency Commission’s final report.

One of the 56 recommendations coming from the report was to create a protocol to protect critical trade corridors and infrastructure.

"I am meeting, later this week, with my provincial counterpart. We're going to be discussing those recommendations. I think it's clear that there needs to be better coordination and communication between various levels of government when it comes to an emergency," said Alghabra while in Windsor Wednesday.

The route to the Ambassador Bridge was closed by individuals protesting COVID-19 mandates for nearly a week in February 2022. It jeopardized trade, cost the auto industry upwards of $300 million, and the City of Windsor nearly $7 million.

"There are things that could have been done, should have been done that could have prevented the escalation that we saw. But we did the right thing at the time, given the seriousness of the situation," said Alghabra.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens has been advocating for Windsor to be a part of any efforts moving forward to create a multi-jurisdictional protocol for the border.
