TRQSS workers ratify first collective agreement

After less than a month of talks at the bargaining table, Unifor Local 444 is happy to announce workers at TRQSS have their first collective agreement.

Talks between the seatbelt maker in Lakeshore and the union started on April 12. The workers only unionized in January and ratified the deal over the weekend.

Unifor Local 444 said the agreement offers workers a bump up in pay and benefits, paid days off, and improvements to working conditions and job posting procedures.

"I would argue that the most crucial gain of this new agreement is that you are no longer fighting any issue alone," said President Dave Cassidy. "You now have a collective voice in your workplace, with proper union representation and a collective agreement to refer to."

Workers at the manufacturing plant approached the union last year about unionizing, and it launched one of the largest organizing drives in Unifor's history.

The union represents about 600 members at TRQSS.
