Tecumseh electrifying bus fleet and expanding active transportation

The Town of Tecumseh received $3.6 million from the federal government to buy two new electric buses and expand its active transportation network.

"The buses send a clear message to our folks out there that we want to start building our community to be as close as we can to zero-based carbon," said Mayor Gary McNamara.

With the grant in hand, the town will issue an RFP for the new electric buses. They are not expected to be in service until 2024. The buses will replace the ones currently in use.

The funds will also go toward the construction of 2.5 kilometres of multi-use pathway along Lesperance Road from Riverside Drive to First Street and on Little River Boulevard from Lesperance to the town's border with Windsor.

"This is about quality of life. This is about our residents being able to hop on a bike or hop on an electric bus, really be connected, and move around where they want to move to," said Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk.

The town is contributing $2 million to the project. Council approved hiring a consultant at Tuesday night's meeting. Construction is expected to start in the fall.
